Dachshunds are long, low-bodied dogs created to crawl into a burrow to hunt badger. Dachshund (German word) translated means "Badger Hound". Even though Dachshunds were originally bred as hunters, this breed's unique appearance and cheerful nature has made it very popular as a family dog, companion, and a watchdog. Dachshunds are courageous, lively, clever, affectionate and loving to their family. The Dachshund is protective of his or her environment and may bark when sensing a potential threat.
Miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds and under. Dachshunds weighing 12-15 pounds are often called "tweenies." The standard Dachshund weighs from 16-32 pounds. The Dachshund is bred in three coat varieties: the long hair (long, silky coat), the smooth (short) hair, and the wire (a dense wiry coat) hair. The size of this breed is suited for apartment living and small yards. Although Dachshunds are active dogs, their exercise requirements can be met with walks on a leash or playing in the yard. A Dachshund should never be allowed to jump down from a bed or a chair in order to avoid damaging his or her long back.
Dachshunds have little body odor and have minimal grooming requirements. Occasional but thorough rubbing of the whole body with a damp cloth will usually be sufficient for the smooth-haired Dachshund. The long-haired Dachshund needs to be brushed and combed 2-3 times weekly. Other grooming requirements include clipping nails, cleaning inside of the ears, and bathing when necessary.
Housebreaking and crate training depends on the puppy; some are easier than others. If you just cannot resist the sight of Dachshund puppies for sale and must get one, know that it takes a lot of energy, patience, and dedication to housetrain any puppy. However, if you are willing to invest time and energy for just a few short weeks in housetraining, the effort will make a positive difference in the life of your Dachshund puppy.
